Green Alternative Energy Power Secrets: Geothermal Power as a Source of Alternative Energy

Geothermal energy technology demands lot of our attention. This form of alternative source of energy taps the naturally produced energy by our mother Earth. Till now this vast alternative energy source lying beneath our feet is grossly underutilized. We need to explore the technologies to unearth the huge potential it has.

Earth holds a temperature at its core as high as 60 times more than the temperature of boiling water, and this high degree of temperature generates pressures, which exert its power just few miles below the surface of the earth. This pressure can have enormous energy potential. During a volcanic blast, we experience the power of this energy generated from the superheated fluids or magma the Earth holding underneath. During an eruption, this magma comes out on the Earth's surface as a result of the pressure generated by the heat inside.

In some areas, the fluid oozes as steam through fine gaps or vents in the surface. If we can design special vents to collect the magma, we can preserve this immense power of nature and generate electricity for lighting and heating our homes. To develop a geothermal power plant, we need to dig a well at a place where the source of magma is very high. The fluid will produce the steam when forced to the surface through a pipeline, and the steam produced from the fluid can turn a turbine engine to generate electricity.

Some forms of criticism are preventing the implementation of geothermal energy tapping and restricting its utilization in a big way, as it should have been. As per the critics, the money and time it requires to setup a geothermal energy power station is unreasonable in terms of its return. Structuring a geothermal power plant would cost heavily and there is no certaintity that it would be turned into a profit-making center. There is a chance that the place where the plant will be developed may not generate the amount of steam required to operate the plant viably. Moreover, the environmentalists are of the opinion that the magma would carry the potentially harmful material in the surface of the Earth.

Because geothermal energy is a form of natural energy derived from earth and does not generate polluting agents, the criticisms can only be countered when we explore the potential more extensively. After setting up a plant in a suitable place, minimum effort is required to channel the energy. Geothermal plants lead to fewer damaging effects to the environment because of their smaller sizes compared to large electrical plants and giant dams, or large atomic energy facilities. Using geothermal energy resources would enable us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels like oil and coal.

The most important fact is that we are never going to have a shortage of geothermal energy and due its nature of being ubiquitous, there is no possibility of regular increase in price. After recovering the initial cost of investigation and setting up of a power plant, producing geothermal energy will prove to be extremely cost effective.
